School of Physical Science and Technology established Strategic Development Committee in first plenary meeting

On June 11, the inauguration ceremony and the first plenary meeting of the Strategic Development Committee of the School of Physical Science and Technology were held in the Science Museum.

Attendees at the occasion included Yuan Zhanting, Party Secretary of Lanzhou University; Yan Chunhua, President of Lanzhou University; Dong Guoxuan, Deputy Director of the Department of Mathematics and Physics of the National Natural Science; Pu Men, Director of Physics II Division of the Department of Mathematics and Physics of the National Natural Science Foundation and Deputy Director of the Innovation Office of Gansu Province; as well as members of the Strategic Development Committee and alumni of Lanzhou University.

Staff from relevant departments of the university, the Party and administrative members of the School of Physical Science and Technology, directors of the discipline, and faculty representatives also attended the event.

Luo Honggang, Dean of the School of Physical Science and Technology, presided over the meeting and announced the list of members of the Strategic Development Committees. He briefly introduced the background and goals of the Strategic Development Committee. The honorary directors of the committee are Academician Ge Molin and Academician Zhan Wenlong, and the director is Academician Sun Changxuan. The committee consists of 37 representatives from more than 20 universities, research institutes and enterprises in China, including 16 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Yuan Zhanting congratulated the establishment of the Strategic Development Committee. He also introduced the history of the School of Physical Science and Technology and Lanzhou University’s blueprint of building itself into a “double first-class” higher institution. According to Mr. Yuan, the university has thoroughly implemented the new-era spirit of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, by adhering to “unremitting efforts” and focusing on “ideological building, innovation, reform, improvement, and integrity.”

He emphasized the importance of reform in breaking down barriers to development, in stimulating innovation, and in boosting academic integration with the country's primary strategic needs and local economic and social demands. The School of Physical Science and Technology, with high ideals and unique characteristics, would carry out the “integration of services” and comprehensive reforms as a pilot in intensifying the “double first-class” undertaking, said Mr. Yuan. He also expressed wishes for the experts and scholars to offer opinions and help to the school in its mission ahead.

President Yan Chunhua issued letters of appointment to the 26 members of the meeting. Subsequently, Yan Chunhua, Sun Changyi, Dong Guoxuan, and Zhong Baoshen jointly unveiled the brand of the Strategic Development Committee. Representatives of the committee, Dong Guoxuan, Zhao Hongwei and Zhang Shuguang, made speeches.

Academician Sun Changxi, Director of the Strategic Development Committee, presided over the first plenary meeting.

The establishment of the Strategic Committee is one of the critical measures for the School of Physical Science and Technology to “realize high ideals through practical work.” The purpose is to gather scientific and academic resources from the country to deepen the “double first-class” construction and comprehensive reform. It is hoped that through this platform, scholars and scientists will unite to promote innovation and progress and help Lanzhou University build a unique path of development.
